Special Shopping Hours for Seniors and Others at Higher Risk in Northwest Indiana …

The CDC has determined that older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions might be at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19. Those at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19 are:

People of all ages with underlying medical conditions, particularly if not well controlled, including:

  • People with chronic lung disease or moderate to severe asthma
  • People who have serious heart conditions
  • People who are immunocompromised
    • Many conditions can cause a person to be immunocompromised, including cancer treatment, smoking, bone marrow or organ transplantation, immune deficiencies, poorly controlled HIV or AIDS, and prolonged use of corticosteroids and other immune weakening medications
  • People with severe obesity (body mass index [BMI] of 40 or higher)
  • People with diabetes
  • People with chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis
  • People with liver disease

Many area stores have blocked out specific time periods for their vulnerable customers to shop at reduced risk. We strongly urge our patients to take advantage of these special shopping times to help reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19. It is also recommended that everyone uses a face-covering whenever doing essential errands.

The special shopping times include:

  • Aldi – Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 – 9:30 to seniors and at-risk patrons.
  • Big Lots – Anyone 65 or older and those with underlying health concerns who feel they are most vulnerable to the virus are welcome to shop during the senior hour. Keeping employees and shoppers safe is our top priority. Shop during the first hour of each day.
  • Jewels – Jewels has created Golden Hours – store hours for your local Jewel-Osco from 7:00 am to 9:00 am every Tuesday and Thursday. The set hours are available for senior citizens and other at-risk members of our community such as pregnant women or those with compromised immune systems.
  • Target – Dedicated shopping time for the most vulnerable guests, making the first hour that stores are open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays available for those over 65 years old, pregnant women and those defined by the CDC as vulnerable or at-risk. Website
  • VanTils – Senior Shopping Hour Monday – Friday: 6am – 7am – https://strackandvantil.com/locations/munster/
  • Walgreens – Tuesdays are Senior Days – shop from 8-9 a.m. Tuesdays.
  • Walmart – Walmart is offering special shopping hours. From March 24 through April 28, Walmart stores will host an hour-long senior shopping event every Tuesday for customers aged 60 and older. This will start one hour before the store opens. Our Pharmacies and Vision Centers will also be open during this time. https://www.walmart.com/store/1576/schererville-in/details
