Shanu (Shaun) Kondamuri, MD has been a practicing interventional spine and pain care specialist on a full-time basis since completing his fellowship. Additionally, he is an expert in non-surgical care for spine pain, CRPS (or RSD), neuropathic pain, and prescription opioid abuse. Furthermore, he has been the Managing Director of MISS since its inception. Notably, he loves what he does, puts his patients at ease, and quickly builds a strong rapport. Above all, the patients’ full recovery from their painful condition is his primary goal.

Hobbies/Special Interests

Dr. Kondamuri has lived for decades in Northwest Indiana with his wife, a rehabilitation medicine specialist, and he often visits his grown children. When not working, he follows the advice he gives to his patients regarding health and vitality, by working out almost daily, bicycling, strength training, and formerly running (his knees don’t allow it anymore!) In addition, he manages an overflowing collection of digital photographs started when digital photography was in its infancy. He reads on a variety of medical and non-medical topics, enjoys watching and following college and professional tennis, spends a great deal of time on personal development, mentoring young people on their academic and career paths and with philanthropy.

Professional Achievements

In collaboration with Dr. Dasari, he lobbied aggressively on Capitol Hill for important patient-related issues such as the “National All Schedule Prescription Electronic Reporting (NASPER) Act” which limits controlled substance misuse, abuse, and trafficking. In addition, he has been featured on NBC news, Comcast cable’s Wellness Watch and in other media, and he is frequently quoted in local newspapers. He has also been a Principal Investigator for scientific research studies involving technologies related to chronic spine pain.

Publications & Presentations

Dr. Kondamuri authored a book on Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, (CRPS) for the medical and legal community the entire proceeds of which are donated to charity, primarily to help the uninsured. Additionally, he has also authored and published many scientific and general articles.

Dr. Kondamuri frequently lectures on spine care and pain management-related topics. For example, he developed the “Managing Pain in the New Millennium” lecture series to bring an understanding of the complexities of pain to regional physicians, nurses, workers’ compensation case managers, and healthcare workers. Over time, he has functioned as its program director through each of its well-received yearly programs. Each all-day seminar featured lectures delivered by MISS physicians and invited nationally known lecturers. speaking around a common theme for the day. Past “themes” have included, “Failed Back Surgery Syndrome,” “Neuropathic Pain,” and “Opioid Use and Abuse in Clinical Practice.”

He has been called upon to speak regionally when his expertise is required, such as at the Indiana University School of Medicine basic science and clinical science lecture series, at Methodist Hospitals bi-annual Pain Management Symposium, and at the medical grand rounds at various nearby Indiana and Illinois hospitals. He also gives frequent lectures to the general public and doctors and nurses in training at Indiana University Northwest on topics related to spine care and pain management.

In his role as an expert in pain management for the injured worker, he has often presented at the Indiana Workers’ Compensation Institute (IWCI) and at the Indiana Self-Insurers Association (ISIA) meetings. The Indiana Workers’ Compensation Board frequently requests his expert opinion for complex work injury patients. Likewise, plaintiffs and defense attorneys frequently ask him to review charts and give opinions on patients who have ongoing litigation.
